It's nice hotel, extremely friendly staff...until you get into restaurant on site. I'm staying in this hotel since it was built, spending almost two months scattered over the year. The hotel itself, its facilities are in good shape, best you can find in the area. However, the restaurant beside being way overpriced, is simply getting worse every year. Seems they are trying to improve, it simply doesn't work. The service, quality of food, attitude are frankly bad. Breakfast "buffet" at 9:30 (30 min before closing) offers crumbles and empty dishes. Ordering a la carte could make you spend another 30 min of waiting time. I'll spare my time on details for dirty utensils and occasional hair... Dinner is pretending to be upscaled. However, it relates mostly to the prices, not quality. Nothing wrong to say about the waitress staff working there. It seems the management has totally failed. Bottom line: recommend to stay in the hotel, but avoid the restaurant.
We arrived in David after travelling for a long time and went to the hotel that my family has always stayed at, the OTHER historical hotel in town. I was very disappointed with that location and immediately proceeded to cancel my stay and called Hotel Ciudad de David (I had read reviews on TA before). The level of customer service on the that one phone call was enough for me to make my decision to move on even faster. Upon arrival they had their door service ready to get my bags to the room. The lobby, immediately, gives a sense of business and better class...arguably in the province. They were able to give me a discount (not as great had I booked ahead of time. They had special rates if you booked 14 or 30 days prior). The front desk was very curteous and I proceeded on my way to the room. When I got there, with my wife and 9 year old son, we were greeted by the bellman with our luggage. He insisted on doing it alone. Gave him a tip and said goodbye. The room, very comparable to a Sheraton. The beds, doubles, are very spacious and extremely well done and clean. The air in the room was NOT musty (due to the humidity outside) and the amenities were very well stocked. They have a mini bar stocked with chocolate, soda and beers. They also provide snacks, and the prices are not overly exagerated. The TV, a flat screen, had lots of channels and if you change the SAP option on the television it's mostly in English (my 9 year old doesn't speak it well). The bathrooms were very clean, the tiles had nothing in the corners inside or out. The water pressure was outstanding. Plenty of shampoo, conditioner, soap and towels. The pool is smaller than most hotels but it's very secluded and it's cool how it overlooks the city. They were not even 2 minutes, after we got to the pool, with a towel for my son: efficiency. The first morning we went down for breakfast and it was awesome. It's inside their Stylo restaurant and it had fresh fruit juice (papaya, orange, pineapple) bagels, croissants, bread, cereal, coffee (Duran...awesome) eggs, hard boiled eggs, chicken, meatballs, bacon, tortillas, hojaldras (yum x100) and other assortments. Top notch...and you don't wait more than a few minutes to get one of them refilled....oh and it's included in their price. I only had to ask once for an extra towel (they put 2 the first night)...within 2 minutes we had and additional one, and they never put 2 again, always 3....same for shampoo and conditioner. Being Panamenian raised I know how hard they work cleaning these rooms. We would always leave a thank you note thanking them and I would include a small tip. Our room was so nice, you could eat off of the floor. No dust anywhere and all new bedding. The restaurant for dinner, phenomenal. Ceviche, patacones, seafood medley, great. All greatly priced too. The parking: 2 floors attached to the building. They are level 1 and 2, the hotel is 3-6. All covered which goes a long way, especially considering the rainstorms that come down around this part of the world. On our last night David got hammered with rain, our car was right there in front of the elevator and ready for us. The ONLY negative part to this hotel...the parking spacing, they are very narrow and it makes for some fun times to get in...but never a shortage of spaces. Check out was great and fast. I will most definetely be returning to Hotel Ciudad de David.
